Sam Houston: Document Signed Appointing Captain John W. Hood To The "Burleson Guards" - 2nd Regiment, Texas Infantry. 14" x 17" appointment signed by Governor of Texas Sam Houston, dated March 1, 1861. He is appointing John W. Hood Captain of the "Burleson Guards" - 2nd Texas Infantry. Hood is credited with organizing "Company G" of this regiment. Texas declared Secession on February 1, 1861 and joined the Confederacy a little more than a month later on March 2, one day after this document was signed. Governor Sam Houston accepted secession but asserted that the Convention had no power to link the state with the new Southern Confederacy. Instead, he urged that Texas revert to its former status as an independent republic and stay neutral. Houston took his seat on March 16, the date state officials were scheduled to take an oath of allegiance to the Confederacy. He remained silent as his name was called out three times and, after failing to respond, the office of governor was declared vacant and Houston was deposed from office. What is also fascinating about this document is what is written on the reverse. A proclamation signed by John W. Hood, in part "I John W. Hood do solemnly swear that I will faithfully and impartially discharge and perform all the duties incumbent on me as Captain of the Burleson Guards (Volunteer Company) according to the best of my skill and ability, agreeably to the Constitution and laws of the State of Texas, and also to the Constitution and laws of the Confederate States of America-so long as the State of Texas shall remain a member of that Confederacy". It is signed by Hood, and dated March 28, 1861. The document has a large bold signature of Houston and that of Secretary of State Eber W. Cave. Along with the document is a muster roll dated April 13, 1862 for the 2nd Texas Infantry, which measures 21" x 29". The appointment has some scattered age, but over all in fine condition. These documents have descended through the family, and we are proud they have entrusted Heritage to offer them for auction. A great piece of Texas history.Auction Info
