Description
Sam Houston Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages, 8.75" x 9.5", Washington; February 4, 1856.Letter addressed to Austin Mayor Edward R. Peck providing an introduction for James G. Chapman, visiting from Ohio. Housed in a custom quarter brown pebble leather and cloth slipcase.
The letter reads, "Allow me to present to your kindness Mr. James G. Chapman of Ohio, who visits our state to take a look at it, and perhaps make a location for life. Mr. C. comes to me highly recommended, is a most worthy gentleman, and as such, I present him to you, and at the same time requesting your characteristic civilities in his behalf. We are all here right side up!" Signed, "Truly thy friend, Sam Houston."
At the time of this letter, Houston was serving as a senator in Washington. Later in the year, he was unsuccessful in securing the presidential nomination for the American Party. Houston had a controversial run in the United States Senate. Shortly after his election in 1853, he vehemently opposed the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which ultimately caused him to break from his fellow Democrats. He also supported barring Catholics from holding office and creating a Native American state.
Condition: Creased along folds and irregularly toned, especially on recto. Minor separations along the folds.
