Description
Sam Houston 1836 Land Scrip Document Signed "Sam Houston" as President of Texas, one page, 10" x 16". Columbia, Texas, December 12, 1836. Countersigned "Henry Smith" as Secretary of the Treasury. The ornately bordered edges are frayed at the right, with tiny holes at the left. "X" cut cancellations touch Smith's signature, removing a sliver from the "S", and indiscernibly pass through Houston's autograph. Holes in the lower horizontal fold touch the upper edge of "S" and the "t" bar flourish in the boldly signed, with paraph, "Sam Houston". Red wax seal, 1" diameter, affixed to the lower right of Houston's signature. Top left corner has been repaired on verso with archival tape. Very good condition. When Texas became a republic in 1836, it was rich in lands but low in funds. In an effort to convert the public domain into cash, an act of December 10, 1836 authorized the issuance of land scrip for sale, the proceeds to be applied to the public debt. An agency was established in the city of Mobile, and David White was authorized as an agent of Texas to sell land scrip at a minimum rate of 50ยข per acre for the benefit of the government. David White has signed on verso beneath "For Value received I hereby transfer all the rights title and interest which this script gives me to the Lands herein named to Edward Hull of Texas or his legal representatives. New Orleans, March 25, 1837."
