Description
Robert Morris Autograph Letter Signed "Robt Morris." One page, 7" x 9", "Delaware Works," October 25, 1793, to Timothy Green, a lawyer in New York City. Robert Morris was an American merchant and signer of the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the U.S. Constitution. He was known as the "Financier of the Revolution" because of his role in personally financing America in the Revolutionary War from 1781 to 1784. When he wrote this letter, he was serving as a U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania. In addition to being a statesman, Morris was also an entrepreneur with various companies in his name and a land speculator. He bought large swaths of land, much of it in the south. In this letter, he asks Green for more information about land that Green's friend was offering to sell Morris."I received some time since your letter of the 7th inst. containing a kind of offer of some Lands in South Carolina for Sale but in such vague terms that I can say nothing in answer. If your Friend wants to sell his Lands he should give such a description of the soil situation, Produce & value of them & of his terms; as to (at least) enable proper enquirys to be made by those who might incline to purchase which will not be my case unless the Lands are good & Cheap."
Along with family members, Timothy Green speculated in South Carolina land. His "Friend" who wanted "to sell his Lands" might have been his brother, Samuel Green. A few years after writing this letter, Robert Morris was unable to make his land speculations profitable and, consequently, unable to pay his numerous creditors. He was imprisoned for debt in Philadelphia's Prune Street debtors' prison from February 1798 to August 1801. He died five years later. This letter is boldly written and signed. Smoothed folds.
