Description

Richard Henry Lee Free Frank Address Panel Signed "R. H. Lee." Measuring 5" x 3.25", the panel has been removed from a larger document. Addressed to "Doctor William Shipper Jun / Philadelphia." Undated, but faintly postmarked March 30 with the year 1785 appearing on the left edge. Lee (1732-1794) is best known for his motion in the Second Continental Congress calling for the colonies' independence from Great Britain. His legendary resolution of June 1776 led to the United States Declaration of Independence, of which he was a signer. He served as president of the Continental Congress (if the date on the address panel is correct, Lee free franked this letter as president) for one term and was a senator from Virginia.
