Description

Republic of Texas $50 Note with Mirabeau Lamar Secretarial Signature. 7 1/4 x 3 inches, [Austin, Texas]; January 1, 1840. A $50 Republic of Texas note, "No. 933," with President Mirabeau Lamar's secretarial signature. Additionally signed by James H. Starr as Secretary of the Treasury. With an original vignette created by Freeman Rawdon depicting Venus Rising from the Foam at left, a sailing vessel at center, and a portrait of Stephen Austin at right. With a large "Lone Star" on the back from which the state of Texas receives its nickname "The Lone Star State."

Lamar was elected as the second president of the Republic of Texas, taking office in 1838 following his term as vice president under Sam Houston. He is widely known for his significant contributions to education, often referred to as the "Father of Education in Texas."

Condition: Lightly toned with two cut cancellations at the center; cancellations sealed with archival tissue on verso.
