McCullough giving a brief resume of his public service: "I was in the State Senate of Florida from Jan 69 until Jan 1870. I was also a member of the House of Repts, from June 68 to Jan 69, and a member of the Constitutional Convention in 1868." Second leaf mounted to another sheet, stains at left margin, prominent transmittal folds.

Hiram R. Revels Card Signed "H R Revels." The recipient, Walker, was a well known career civil servant and educator. One negligible stain at middle, ink blot to one letter, otherwise very good.

"Radical Members" Carte-de-Visite. 2 ½ x 4 inches, circa 1868 . No Backstamp. Montage image titled, "Radical Members of the SoCa Legislature," with printed identifications on verso, mostly by last name, of each pictured member of the South Carolina Legislature. A remarkable historical artifact of the Reconstruction Era in South Carolina.

The Reconstruction Acts of 1867-68 outlined the conditions under which the Southern states would be readmitted into the Union. As a result of these Acts and of the new State Constitutions enacted thereunder, the newly freedmen not only had the right to vote but they were also allowed to serve in state government as evidenced by this unique item. An online search reveals that this CDV, or a slightly different version of it, is in the holdings of numerous museums and educational institutions such as the Library of Congress, The National Museum of African American History and Culture (Smithsonian), and Princeton University. Soiled, slightly faded and worn, good.

Condition: As noted.
