Description

Orders Sent to Governor Francis R. Lubbock. One partially printed page, 8.25" x 10.25", Houston; December 23, 1864. Signed and received from the Major and Provost Martial General for Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. It reads, in part:

"You will cause the following named prisoners who made their escape from Guard House at Houston...to be arrested and forwarded to this office if found in your jurisdiction." Five prisoners are listed as: F. Eberling, F.R. Hernden, W.J.M. Gahan, G.W. Flowers, and a citizen F. Stanley. Accompanied by the original transmittal cover. The document is accompanied by a magazine clipping, 10.25" x 13.75", from Southern Industrial and Lumber Review, dated July 1905. With an article entitled "The Death of Lubbock." The document has flattened mail folds. Lightly toned with bumping and minor loss at corners. A small hole at one of the intersecting folds. The magazine clipping has flattened folds with numerous separations at folds and small holes at folds. Light toning. Minor chipping at edges.

Francis Lubbock served as the governor of Texas during the Civil War years. When his term ended in 1863 he joined the Confederate army as a lieutenant colonel and was ultimately promoted aide-de-camp to Jefferson Davis. All proceeds to benefit educational programs at The Bryan Museum.
