Description

John Witherspoon Autograph Pay Order Signed "Jno Witherspoon." One page, 7.75" x 3.5", Princeton [New Jersey], April 6, 1789. Witherspoon orders "At twenty Days . . . pay to the order of John Rep[?] twenty one Dollars & five ninetieths . . . Acct herewith transmitted value received by John S. Dart." Docketed on the verso. Spots of light foxing. This toned document is carefully inset into an archival sheet to an overall size of 9.5" x 6".

One of the more scarce of the Declaration of Independence signers, John Witherspoon (1723-1794) was the only clergyman to sign it. He was president of the College of New Jersey (later Princeton) during the War of Independence when the campus was nearly destroyed and Witherspoon was responsible for its rebuilding.
