Description
John Rutledge Autograph Letter Signed to Anthony Wayne. Signed "J. Rutledge", one page with integral address panel, 7.25" x 9.5", n.p. , "Sunday Noon", docketed on verso "April 1789". The letter reads, in part: "By a late Law, none of the Judges can leave the State unless on heed... & with the Governor's permission. The circumstances deprive me of the pleasure which otherwise I would have had of paying you a visit. I was not in the House when the law was passed but hope at the next meeting it will be so allowed or explained as not to prevent one person from crossing a River to visit a friend..." Creases as expected, the wax seal remains intact. Overall very good condition. Rutledge, a signer of the Constitution, was serving in the South Carolina Court of Chancery when he penned this letter. He would be nominated to the Supreme Court by President Washington a few months later, and would eventually be its second Chief Justice. Small seal tear on the integral address leaf, lightly toned.Auction Info
