John Nicholson (1757-1800) was a Pennsylvania politician and Anti-federalist who served as the state's comptroller general before resigning amidst allegations of abuse of his authority. After leaving public office, he turned to private enterprise, joining forces with Robert Morris and James Greenleaf in a series of land speculation ventures. Their efforts culminated in the creation of the North American Land Company in 1796, the same year Nicholson signed this promissory note. The enterprise ultimately collapsed, plunging Nicholson into financial ruin. He died in debtors' prison in 1800, leaving behind an estimated $4 million in debt.
