Description
John Hancock Pay Warrant Signed as governor of Massachusetts. One page, 6.75" x 8.5"(sight), Boston, May 12, 1792, to State Treasurer Alexander Hodgdon whereby he is "ordered and directed to pay unto Messrs. Ruggle & Smith the Sum of Three hundred eighty three pounds two Shillings & 3d in full for rations &c supplied the Garrison & Convicts on Castle island agreeable to Contract for Six months to the month of March last inclusively for which this shall be your sufficient Warrant." Countersigned by the first Massachusetts Secretary of State John Avery, Jr. In 1792, Hancock was serving for a second, nonconsecutive time as governor of Massachusetts. His health deteriorating, he died fifteen months later at the age of 56.Castle Island, located south of the city of Boston, had been fortified since the early seventeenth century and was the home of Castle William (renamed Fort Independence in 1797), the main base of operations for the British during their Siege of Boston. It later served as the first state prison for the State of Massachusetts.
Smoothed folds with light, uneven toning. The bold, familiar signature and paraph is unaffected and bright. Matted and framed with an engraved portrait reproduction of Alonzo Chappel's painting of Hancock to an overall size of 22.25" x 24".
