Description

John Hancock Military Appointment Signed as Governor of Massachusetts. One partially-printed page, 15"x 12" (sight), [Boston], May 30, 1790, appointing "Joseph Bracheld Pentleman...Captain of a Company in the Sixth Regiment of the first Division of the militia of this Commonwealth comprehending the County of Suffolk." With blind-embossed paper Seal of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in the upper left corner. One of the most distinctive signatures in history, Hancock's name appears at left below the seal. Countersigned by John Avery, Jr. as first Secretary of the Commonwealth. Toned with scattered foxing. Some paper loss which has been archivally repaired, but with resultant loss of paper and text. Matted and framed with a portrait of the famous statesman and engraved plate reading "John Hancock/1737-1793/American Patriot" to an overall size of 25" x 33".
