Description
John Hancock Lottery Ticket Signed "John Hancock." 3.75" x 1.75", Boston; April 1767. Numbered 859, a lottery ticket for the rebuilding of Faneuil Hall. The ticket "entitles the Possessor to any Prize drawn against said Number, in a Lottery granted by an Act of the General Court of the Province of the Massachusetts-Bay, for Re-building FANEUIL-Hall; subject to no Deduction." On verso has been written in ink "W Burroughs." With floral decorations at the borders.Faneuil Hall, located in Government Center in Boston, is a marketplace and meeting hall built in 1743. The hall burned down in 1761, but was rebuilt by the townspeople the following year. The hall was used by several famous revolutionaries, such as Samuel Adams and James Otis, earning it the nickname "the Cradle of Liberty."
Condition: Darkly toned, with a flattened center fold. Slightly uneven edges. Separation at the fold has been stabilized on verso with archival material. Soiling and foxing on verso. With Hancock's characteristic large, bold signature.
