John Hancock franking signature on cover transmitting Congressional resolves in 1776
John Hancock Franking Signature on a Cover Addressed in His Hand. 12.5" x 8"; "Congress, Philad.a"; June 22, 1776. A cover addressed by John Hancock to "Joseph Trumbull Esqr. / Commissary General & c. / at New York". With a bold franking signature by Hancock as President of the Continental Congress. Trumbull has docketed the cover at the top: "... Jno_ Hancock / 22nd June 1776 - ansd- / Resolves of Congress Inclosed."We could not find the original letter enclosed, but were able to identify the Congressional Resolves passed that could have been enclosed with Hancock's letter. Trumbull had petitioned Congress the previous month asking for an increase in pay, and a resolve was passed on June 17, 1776 increasing Trumbull's pay to $150 a month. Notably, two weeks earlier pm June 7, the second Continental Congress had also passed the Resolution of Independence which declared the Colonies independent of Britain. The Resolution also sought to established a plan to pursue foreign relations and a plan to unite the states officially.
Condition: Fragile, with multiple partial separations occurring at the folds. Paper loss at top and bottom center, where the seal was removed. A few light stains from previous repairs and dampstaining along the right edge. Separations have been reinforced with archival tap on verso. Tiny tears, chipping and creasing along bottom.
