The original document is dated December 31, 1772 and is for a loan of one hundred pounds made to Josiah Jennison, William Bond, and Benjamin Munroe. It was issued by Thomas Hubbard, who had been serving as Treasurer of Harvard University at the time. Signed "John Hancock" on January 5, 1774 acknowledging a payment made by William Bond on December 31, 1773. Additional payments made in 1778 are recorded beneath and signed by Ebenezer Storer. The document is matted and framed with an engraving of Hancock to the overall size of 13" x 16.5". A window on the verso of the frame allows for viewing of the full front page of the document.

Hancock, a graduate of Harvard, assumed the position of Treasurer of Harvard University in 1773. He was responsible for the University's finances and his duties included providing reports to then-University President Samuel Langdon. However, the following year as Hancock became more and more involved with the American Revolution, he abandoned his duties without officially resigning. A years long feud between Hancock and Harvard ensued. Harvard finally appointed Ebenezer Storer as treasurer, and Hancock only learned of his dismissal from a newspaper announcement in January of 1778.

Condition: Not examined outside of the frame. Minor toning throughout, with a separation along the central horizontal fold affecting a line of text. Framing has light wear and a few small chips to the gilded trim.
