Description
Two Days Before Cornwallis' Surrender at Yorktown, John Hancock Signs Twice on an Appointment for Brigadier General Solomon Lovell
John Hancock Appointment Signed Twice ("John
Hancock"). One partially printed page, 11 3/4 x 17 1/2 inches
(sight). Massachusetts; October 17, 1781. Matted and window-framed
to an overall size of 17 3/4 x 23 1/2 inches, showing Hancock's
signature on each side.Dated October 17, 1781-the very week of the British surrender at Yorktown-this appointment falls at the climactic moment of the Revolutionary War. While military operations were reaching their decisive conclusion in Virginia, Hancock appoints "Solomon Lovell Esq'r of Weymouth to be one of the Justices to keep the Peace in the County of Suffolk in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, for the term of seven years..." Boldly signed on the recto by Hancock as Governor of Massachusetts, "John Hancock." He signs again on the verso, "John Hancock," testifying on April 1, 1783, that Lovell "took the several Oaths required by the constitution of this Commonwealth."
The document is also countersigned by John Avery as Secretary of the Commonwealth. Paper embossed seal of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts at the upper left on the recto.
Solomon Lovell served as a Brigadier General of the Suffolk County militia during the Revolutionary War, commanding Massachusetts troops at Dorchester in 1776, the Battle of Rhode Island in 1778, and the Penobscot Expedition in 1779. Lovell then devoted his time to politics, serving in public office until his death in 1801.
Includes a Letter of Authenticity from PSA/DNA.
Condition: Not examined out of frame. Lightly toned with smoothed folds, one just passing through the "J" of Hancock's signature on the verso. A few minor spots of staining or soiling. Separations and rectangular adhesive staining at the edges of the centermost fold.
