John C. Calhoun Autograph Letter Signed. One page of a bifolium, 4 7/8 x 7 7/8 inches; no place, January 30, 1815. U.S. Representative and future Vice President John Calhoun writes to Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service Samuel Harrison Smith, in full:"I presented the name of Mr. Crawford or a suitable person for the place of assessor. I have not heard from you since the date of my note; be so good as to say what I may write to Mr. Crawford or the subject of his appointment." Signed, "J.C. Calhoun." Docketed on verso.
Condition: Document split into three pieces along folds, affecting text. Minor offset toning with scattered stains and ink blotches. Wax seal is present at top right margin of second leaf recto; with minor offsetting and paper loss at bottom right edge.
