Description

Jefferson Davis Letter Signed "Jeffn Davis" as acting secretary of the navy. One page, 7.75" x 10", "Navy Department," October 4, 1853, to Commodore Charles Stewart, Commandant of the Naval Yard in Philadelphia. Davis writes, in full: "Your letter of the 3d Ins't with its enclosure from Purser Geo. H. White, has been received, and the order directing a Medical survey to be held in his case is hereby revoked." Toned along the edges with a small hole at the lower, left corner, not affecting the text. Fine.

Although best known as the president of the Confederate States, Davis had a military career long before the outbreak of the Civil War. It is unclear why Davis signed this letter as "Acting Secretary of the Navy". President Franklin Pierce had appointed Davis his secretary of war on March 7, 1853, and James Dobbin his secretary of navy the next day. Both men served in their positions until 1857. Charles Stewart (1778-1869) had served in the U. S. Navy during the Quasi-War and the War of 1812.
