Jefferson Davis informs George E. Pickett of his appointment to Captain

Jefferson Davis Document Signed "Jeffn. Davis" as secretary of war. One partially-printed page with integral blank, 7.75" x 9.75", Washington, March 20, 1855. Here, Secretary of War Jefferson Davis informs future Confederate General George E. Pickett "that the President of the United States has appointed you Captain in the Ninth Regiment of Infantry." Smoothed folds are showing some separation at the edges.

After distinguishing himself with the U.S. 8th Infantry during the Mexican War, Lt. Pickett returned to the United States and served for several years on the frontier of Texas. He was posted to Fort Bliss when he received this notice. Following his promotion to captain and transfer to the 9th Infantry, he served for one year at Fortress Monroe and headed out west for duty in Washington Territory, where he would remain until the outbreak of the Civil War.
