Description

Jefferson Davis Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages, 5" x 8", Memphis, December 2, 1872, to J. H. Bowman answering a claim made against Davis' brother while he was practicing law in 1823. Davis responds to the inquiry by stating: "At the date given...my Brother because of ill health and the purpose to engage in planting was winding up his business as a Lawyer and soon thereafter...the partnership of Reed & Davis was dissolved." He then directs Bowman to peruse the books of Reed & Grayson for a better response as he was "...then a school boy...my knowledge of such affairs was quite imperfect." Mounted to a card stock to an overall size of 5.75" x 8.75".
