British general, philanthropist, and founder of the colony of Georgia, James Oglethorpe was also a social reformer who hoped to have Britain's "worthy poor" released from debtor's prison and sent to Georgia to help populate his colony. Oglethorpe sailed for the colonies and settled near Savannah in February 1733. After negotiating with the local Yamacraw tribe to acquire land, Oglethorpe built several forts, the most noteworthy being Fort Frederica which served as British military headquarters on the Georgia coast. On June 9, 1732, he and his fellow trustees received a royal charter for the Georgia land between the Savannah and Altamaha Rivers; they then developed their Georgia Charter and employed Harman Verelst as their accountant.
Oglethorpe left Georgia in 1743 and returned to England and employment with the British Army, where he distinguished himself and rose quickly through the ranks.
