Description
James McHenry Letter Signed. One page, 8 x 12 inches, "Trenton War department," [New Jersey]; October 19, 1799. A letter from James McHenry to Alexander Scott Bullitt, regarding a lost deposit that Bullitt sent to McHenry.The letter reads, in part: "I have received your letter of the 20 August Ultimo. I have applied to the Accountant of the War department with whom the Nesster and Pay Tolls forwarded to this Office are usually deposited, for information respecting the pay Tolls you have mentioned. He informs me that no such papers appear on file in his office and that he has no recollection of their having been presented. I have also caused a search to be made in my Office but no such paper can be found on any memorandum of their having been received, or any letter from you on the subject." Signed, "James W Henry."
This letter was penned near the end of Henry's tenure as Secretary of War. He served from 1796 to 1800, under both George Washington and John Adams, advising Congress to maintain a strong, organized military force. Although McHenry was generally liked by Washington, his relationship with Adams was stormy from the outset, as he was closely associated with Federalists Timothy Pickering and Oliver Wolcott Jr. In May of 1800, Adams demanded McHenry's resignation due to his alleged incompetence as an administrator.
Condition: Moderately toned with smoothed folds. Faded ink transfer throughout, not affecting readability of text. Bottom margin is creased and worn, with a 1 1/2 inch vertical separation and a 3 1/4 inch horizontal separation, as well as a paperclip rust stain. Unevenly trimmed panel at the left margin with paperclip rust stain and remnants of red sealing wax.
