Jacob Thompson Signature and Carte de Visite. Placed on a 3.75" x 1.25" piece of ruled paper, the former U.S. secretary of the interior writes: "J. Thompson formerly of Miss[issip]pi now of Memphis, Tenn." The CDV measures 2.25" x 4" and is a full-length portrait of a heavily bearded Thompson, posed slightly to his left with his right hand on the lapel of his frock coat, a Confederate national flag on the wall behind. Backstamp of W. Chase of Halifax [Nova Scotia, Canada] on the verso. Thompson was likely in self-imposed exile in Canada when this photograph was taken. Overall both are in fine condition.

Shortly after resigning as secretary of the interior of the U.S., Jacob Thompson (1810-1885) became inspector general of the Army of the Confederate States. In 1864, he headed a commission in Canada which performed covert operations, including a meeting with Washington Hunt, the former governor of New York, regarding the establishment of a Northwestern Confederacy and a rumored (though never proven) meeting with Lincoln assassin, John Wilkes Booth. Fearing for his life, he spent time in England after the war before returning to Canada. Eventually, he found it safe to return home, settling in Tennessee.
