Description
Henry Clay Four Autograph Letters Signed.Henry Clay Autograph Letter Signed "H. Clay." Two pages (of a bifolium) with an integral address leaf with free frank signed by Clay, 8" x 10", Washington [D.C.]; January 23, 1826. An autograph letter signed by Clay, then serving as Secretary of State, to John Hough James (1800-1881), a Cincinnati lawyer, banker, farmer, politician, writer, and Clay's friend, in which Clay discusses his health and opposition in Congress to the John Quincy Adams administration. The letter in part reads: "The disposition to oppose the Administration in Congress is, I think, less strong now than it was at the commencement of the Session; but this is not the effect of any diminution to the desire to oppose, on the part of a few, but from a conviction that opposition is pointless. In Richmond they are endeavoring to get up a 'crisis,' but every body out of Virginia sees that their telescope only wants wiping, or to receive a different direction." The letter is virtually detached at the crease of the bifolium; there is paper loss along the left-hand edges and on the left-hand side of the address sheet where the wax seal was broken. Two circle adhesives are attached to left-side of letter.
