Description
Government of Texas $20 Note with Sam Houston Secretarial Signature. Single sheet, 7 1/4 x 3 inches, Houston, Texas; November 15, 1838. A $20 Government of Texas note, "No. 2398" redeemable at ten percent interest per annum with President Sam Houston's secretarial signature. Additionally signed by Henry Smith as Treasurer. Decorated with a vignette of Minerva with a shield and spear at left and Liberty clutching a spear and reclining on cotton bales at upper right. The shield which Minerva leans upon contains a star with six points. These notes were payable twelve months from date of issue and bore 10% interest in the meantime. However, unlike the United States' gold, silver, and copper coins, these notes issued by the Republic of Texas represented only a promise of future payment. As it became apparent that the Republic lacked the ability to pay out, their value plummeted.
Condition: Lightly toned with very minor edgewear. Three cut cancellations, including one through each signature.
