Description
Gideon Welles Telegram Signed. One page, 7.25" x 9" (sight), "Navy Department," July 30, 1863. President Lincoln had long believed the area of East Tennessee to be vital to the Union cause, possessing a population that hand remained loyal to the United States and being rich in resources. In mid-1863, Burnside, in command of the Army of the Ohio, was ordered to take the town of Knoxville, Tennessee. Using a combined force of cavalry and infantry and supported by gunboats on the Tennessee River, Burnside occupied Knoxville on September 3, meeting no resistance and being welcomed by the loyal populace.Here Welles, as secretary of the navy, wires a telegram to Fleet Captain A. M. Pennock, requesting naval support during the Knoxville Campaign. He asks, in full: "Gen. Burnside wants two or three more very light draft gunboats. If you have them and they can be spared you are authorized to send them - if not can they be procured."
Smoothed folds, else fine. Matted and framed with an engraved portrait of Welles to an overall size of 20" x 16".
