Description

Gabriel Duvall Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages, 7 3/4 x 9 3/4 inches, Washington, D.C.; August 14, 1813. A letter addressed to William Jones, Secretary of the Navy, recommending a Georgetown rope maker to supervise contracts for the Washington Navy Yard. In part:

"Having been informed that a Navy Agent is to be appointed for the District of Columbia, and that Mr. Parrott is among the candidates recommended, I cannot hesitate to express my opinion of his competency and fitness for the station. Among those by whom Mr. Parrott is known, a recommendation would be unnecessary. As a citizen - a gentleman - and a merchant, he is respectable, and his moral character is exemplary..." Signed, "G. Duval" as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.

Condition: Evenly age-toned with flattened folds. Minor ink erosion resulting in a touch of loss. A few very light stains and ink bleed-through from verso to recto. Minor edgewear, including a touch of loss at the top left corner; separation at the top left corner repaired with archival tissue on the recto; small separations at the edges of the folds.
