Description

Francis E. Spinner: Assorted Documents. Six signed items related to Treasurer Spinner, whose flamboyant signature is unmistakable and actively sought by currency collectors, among others. Includes: 1) carte-de-visite autographed by Spinner on the lower border and dated 1865, 2) 1868 engraved receipt for $1 donated to the "National Lincoln Monument Association", 3) 1875 signature on a small album page, 4) ALS dated November 26, 1867, complying with an autograph request, 5) ALS, Pablo Beach, Florida, June 17, 1890, written in a shaky hand just months before Spinner's death, regarding the execution of a deed and the disbursement of monies and, 6) ALS, 4pp., dated December 20, 1863 on "Treasury of the United States" letterhead, written to Major Edmund Porter, Post Master at Hilton Head, S.C., with superb content. In part: "... We progressives who can see what the future will bring must learn to have more patience with our conservative friends, who will be all right by and by, when they come to get their eyes open and can see things as they really are... The Copperheads in Congress are completely cowed, and every step they take, plunges them more deeply in the mire... We will have a large army in the field early in the Spring, that will, no doubt, do up the 'Confederacy' in 'double quick.'... I think Congress will make things right in regard to the pay of Colored troops."
