Description
David G. Burnet $100 Government Bond Signed as acting president of the Republic of Texas. One partially printed page, 10" x 7.75", Austin , January 1, 1841. Issued to Charles DeMorse, Texas' stock commissioner, who has signed on the verso. Bond No. 1477 containing ten coupons and several punch cancellations. Light, but uneven toning. After Texas declared its independence from Mexico in March 1836, Burnet was elected ad interim president by delegates at the Convention of 1836. He served in this capacity until Sam Houston was elected president in October 1836. Later, Burnet was chosen as vice president under President Mirabeau B. Lamar, serving from 1838 through 1841. While vice president, he often served as acting secretary of state and as acting president. Often out of step with the Texas public and antagonistic towards Sam Houston, he lost an 1841 bid for the presidency to Houston. TSHA Donation. All proceeds, including Buyer's Premium, will go to support TSHA.Auction Info
