Daniel Webster Check Signed...
Description
Daniel Webster Signs a Bank of the United States Check
Daniel Webster Check Signed ("Danl Webster"). 5 3/8 x
2 1/3 inches; Philadelphia; September 20, 1838.A Bank of the United States check made out to Franklin Haven for $2,000, signed by Daniel Webster. With three "x" punch cancellations, one passing through the first "e" of "Webster." Docketed on the verso, followed by Haven's endorsement.
In 1838, Daniel Webster was a U.S. Senator from Massachusetts, serving in the "Golden Age" of the Senate, where he was a leading member of the Whig Party opposing President Martin Van Buren. At the same time, his private correspondence shows that he was struggling with his personal finances. On September 21, 1838, just one day after signing this check, he wrote to his son Edward: "I owe a good deal of money, and am at present receiving but a small income from my profession." It is possible that the present check was issued in connection with those obligations.
Condition: Very good, with minor loss at punch cancellations. Light toning and minor staining throughout.
