Description
Bernhardt Wall. Following General Sam Houston 1793-1863. Limerock: Bernhardt Wall, 1935. The San Jacinto Edition, limited to 100 numbered copies; this copy is out of series and marked "Personal". Signed by the author on the colophon page, with a second signature and inscription on a front endpaper. Square 4to, unpaginated. Olive cloth over plain gray boards, etched title on front board, with gray dust jacket. The original series of 100 included 65 etchings; the copy offered here includes 20, suggesting that it was put together by the printer from remaining prints for his personal use. Front endpaper stamped with "From The Library of Sarah & Joe Sinclair." Inscribed by Wall on second leaf: "To Mrs. J.F Lentz at Marshall Texas, May 20, 1936. Bernhardt Wall."Accompanied by a Bernhardt Wall Autograph Letter Signed, 6" x 9.25", San Antonio, December 28, 1938, addressed to Sallie and Fred Lentz, wishing them a happy Christmas season and a happy New Year. With original transmittal envelope as well as a newspaper clipping about Sam Houston.
"The etchings for this pictorial biography of the American soldier and political leader were made in La Porte, Texas, close to the battlefield of San Jacinto, where Wall had the assistance of Houston's one surviving son" (Francis J. Weber, Following Bernhardt Wall).
Condition: Sunning, scattered spots of foxing on pages. Area of foxing and soiling on front and backboards, light wear on the top and bottom edges of spine. A few of the front and back endpapers are adhered along the gutter, and cannot be fully opened, but the etchings are unaffected.
