Description

Benjamin Franklin Signed Land Grant. One sheet of vellum, 18 x 14 ¼ inches (sight), Pennsylvania; December 6, 1785. Land grant awarding John Atchison a tract of land "on the branches of Octoraro Creek in little Britain." Signed, "B. Franklin Presid.t." Matted and framed with a 1938 warrantee map, a portrait of Franklin, and five informational plaques to the overall size of 52 ½ x 32 ½ inches.

Condition: Creased along folds and lightly toned. Seal intact. Staining in the center of the document, slightly affecting text.


More Information: After brokering the Treaty of Paris that ended the Revolutionary War, Benjamin Franklin returned to the United States and became the President of the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania. Equivalent to the state's governor, the position gave Franklin broad control over the state's affairs. He remained in the role for three years, longer than any other President of the Supreme Executive Council. It was in this capacity that Franklin signed this land grant.
