Description

Alexander Hamilton: Letter Signed. One page, 8" x 10", "Treasury Department," [Philadelphia]; October 28, 1790. Hamilton writes to Sharp Delany, Collector of Customs for Philadelphia, clarifying when tonnage duties would begin to accrue for newly built vessels. Signed, "A Hamilton." Laminated with a heat setting acetate at an earlier time (circa 1930s) to an overall size of 8 1/4" x 12 3/4". The letter reads, in full:

"The Act imposing duties on the Tonnage of Ships or Vessels declares that this charge shall accrue when vessels 'shall be entered in the United States from a foreign port or place.' That entry can never have preceded the application for a Register for a new Ship, and consequently the Tonnage cannot be then demanded. New Vessels applying for coasting licences are charged upon a different principle. The Certificate of payment at the time of obtaining an enrollment and licence is made a requisite to their running free of Tonnage thro' the subsequent year."

Condition: Laminated with a heat setting acetate at an earlier time. Minor wear to the edges, not affecting text.
