Description

Alexander Hamilton Letter Signed. Two pages, 7 1/2 x 10 inches, "Treasury Department," [Philadelphia]; February 8, 1791. A letter to Sharp Delaney, regarding duties owed by the ship Kitty after the passage of a 1791 act that increased duties on specific goods. Signed, "Alexander Hamilton."

In part: "I received yesterday an application from Messrs. R & J Potter, Knox, Henderson & others, relative to the claim of additional duties on Goods & the ship Kitty from London. Having no statement of facts from your office, I am uncertain how far all those things, that may concern the rights of the United States, have occurred to the Applicants, & can, therefore, only give a conditional instruction to you...If, on a careful examination into the facts, it shall appear that the vessel was within the United States (& if in this case the Ship Kitty shall be proved to have been within the Capes of Delaware bay) on the thirty first of Decemr last, I do not conceive that the additional duties can be lawfully demanded."

With a related letter signed by Tench Coxe, dated February 14, 1791. Cox clarifies Hamilton's position, writing, "You will find by examining the letter of the 20th December from the Secretary of the Treasury that the question, answered by him in that letter has no relation to the case of Mess'rs Potters, Knox & Henderson, The practicability of a vessel in another district being entered in yours was the object of the first Question..."

Both letters were laminated with a heat setting acetate at an earlier time (circa 1930s) to an overall size of 8 x 12 3/4 inches.

Condition: Bit of edgewear to Hamilton letter. Coxe letter has a few light stains; edgewear resulting in several small chips and a tear measuring approximately two inches. Laminated with a heat setting acetate
