Hamilton letter regarding procedures for unlicensed vessels entering U.S. ports
Alexander Hamilton Letter Signed as Secretary of the Treasury. Two pages with integral address cover, 7.75" x 9". "Treasury Department"; June 10, 1791. In this letter to Eli Elmer (1756-1805), Collector of Customs at Bridgetown, New Jersey, Hamilton reflects on the entering and clearing of unlicensed vessels. The Treasury Secretary informs Elmer of the current procedures concerning unlicensed vessels entering U.S. ports. Hamilton ends his letter by advising Elmer to communicate "all the circumstances" that arise from vessels that "neglect or refuse" to cooperate with the laws, "in order that it may be judged what course shall be pursued."Condition: Edges of letter, address sheet, and complete separation at integral fold are repaired and reinforced by tissue, not affecting text. Tear in upper left hand corner of first page of letter repaired and not affecting text. Paper loss at the center fold of the integral address cover resulting from the removal of the wax seal. Slight toning throughout, heavier along right margin. With ghosting of image at center. Second page containing full signature remains bright.
