Description
Alexander Hamilton Autograph Receipt Twice Signed "Alexander Hamilton" as Secretary of the Treasury. One page, 7.5" x 4", Philadelphia, August 20, 1791. It reads, in full: "Alexander Hamilton one hundred Dollars towards providing for the use of Society for the establishment of Manufactures in the State of New Jersey certain machines & models of Machines to be delivered to the said Alexander Hamilton." Countersigned by William Pearce. Light foxing and staining along the horizontal fold. Light toning at the left edge. Few spots of foxing. Horizontal fold and damage to lower left corner has been archivally repaired.Alexander Hamilton supported advances in technology and recognized that America needed to establish its own industrial infrastructure and ease its dependence on British goods. In December, 1791, an early effort to spark an "industrial revolution" in the young United States resulted in the composition of the "Report on Manufactures" which he submitted to Congress. In 1791, the Society for the Establishing Useful Manufactures was formed in Paterson, New Jersey.
William Pearce was an English mechanic who had come to the U. S. at the urging of Thomas Digges, and with the endorsement of Hamilton, to assist in the establishment of factories.
