Description
[Texas Rangers]. Wilburn H. King Warrant of Authority for Jesse Lee Hall Signed "W. H. King." One partially-printed page, 8.5" x 7", Austin, July 22, 1889. Used in lieu of badges by 19th century Texas Rangers, descriptive lists such as these were used "for identification . . . kept in the possession of the Ranger to whom it refers, and will be exhibited as a warrant of his authority as such, when called upon, and must be surrendered to his Company Commander when discharged." This particular example was issued to famous Texas Ranger Jesse Lee (Leigh) Hall upon his return to service. Hall reenlisted with the Rangers as a private in Company "F," Frontier Battalion, at 40 years of age. His occupation at the time is listed as a "Stockman." Slight wrinkling and overall toning. Else fine.It is a little known fact that Jesse Lee Hall (1849-1911) briefly returned to the Rangers after retiring in 1880. In the interim, he worked as an agent for the Andarko Indians in the late 1880s and was charged with embezzlement, but, due to lack of evidence, the charges were dropped. He later served in the U.S. Army during the Spanish-American War as a scout in the Philippines. Hall is a member of the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame.
Wilburn H. King (1839-1910), a native of Georgia, moved to Texas sometime in 1861. In the early years of the Civil War, he enlisted as a private in the 18th Texas Infantry, Confederate Army and was promoted to major after the unit was mustered in 1862, rising to the rank of colonel by 1864. Wounded at the Battle of Mansfield (Louisiana, April 8, 1864), he was given a brigadier general's commission one week later. After the war, he served two terms in the Texas House of Representatives and as Texas adjutant general from 1881 through 1891.
