Description

[Revolutionary War]. John Hancock Military Appointment Signed. One partially-printed page, 12" x 11.5" (sight), Massachusetts, July 1, 1781. Hancock, as governor of Massachusetts, here appoints "John Ford . . . First Lieutenant . . . in the Third Regiment of Militia in the County of Plymouth whereof Josiah Hayden Esq. is Colonel." Hancock's distinctive signature is bold. Countersigned by John Avery as secretary of the commonwealth. Minor paper loss along the smoothed folds, but not affecting the text of signatures. Areas of scattered foxing and light waterstaining at the edges. Matted with an engraved portrait of Hancock and framed to an overall size of 23.5" x 18".
