Description

[Republic of Texas]. City of Sabine Certificate of Stock with Sam Houston Autograph Endorsement Signed on Verso. One page, 7 x 3 1/2 inches, Sabina City; January 24, 1839. Certificate "No. 26" signed by Niles F. Smith as agent and endorsed by Sam Houston on the verso. Houston's endorsement is very faded but portions, including his signature, remain just legible. It reads, in part: "Received [illegible] with Gold and Silver / 10th Jany 1840 / Sam Houston."

Sabina City was founded in 1836 by Sam Houston and Philip A. Sublett. The town name was changed to Sabine Pass in 1839, shortly after the issue of this note. Although technically a stock certificate redeemable for land in the city, it was also used as a local circulating medium of exchange as evidenced by Houston's AES.

Condition: Houston's endorsement is very faded. Certificate moderately toned with rough edges and a few small spots of loss. Minor ink corrosion at stockholder's signature on the verso, not affecting legibility of text on the recto.
