Description[Peter Faneuil] 1726 Payment Voucher Featuring the Signatures of Several Prominent Boston Merchants. Two pages, 3" x 7.5".
This document, a voucher for payments received of Henry Deering (alternately spelled "Dering" and "Dearing"), features the signatures of some of Boston's most prominent merchants, most notably Peter Faneuil. Faneuil is probably best known for his gift to the city of Boston of a large market building known as Faneuil Hall. The hall was a vital civic center and hosted many pre-Revolution meetings. The document is also signed by Hugh Vans, a merchant and author of several pamphlets on monetary topics, including "An Inquiry into the Nature and Uses of Money"; and Thomas Cushing, a leading member of the Old South Church and a selectman. The paper of the document has toned with age, but the writing is bright and the signatures bold.
