Description
[Elisha Pease]. Correspondence from John C. Robinson to Future Texas Governor Elisha M. Pease. Three pages of a bifolium, 7.75" x 9.75", Fort Smith, Arkansas; February 8, 1849. Written by Pease's brother-in-law, John Robinson, with news of business at the fort and congratulations on Pease's recent marriage. Reads in part:"...The press of business is now over. I had begun to look for a little relaxation, when I am suddenly ordered as Regimental Quarter Master to Fort Gibson & in a few days we shall be off bag & baggage for the Cherokee Nation. I regret this very much as we have just got comfortably settled in our quarters at this post & shall now have to break up & begin anew...We congratulate you most sincerely on the prospect before you & if your married life should prove as happy, as mine has been, you will never regret the day that you ceased to be reckoned in the congregation of bachelors..." Accompanied by the original transmittal envelope. Flattened mail folds and light foxing. Minor ink bleed through.
Pease served as the 5th (1853-1857) and 13th (1867-1869) governors of Texas. In 1856, a surveyor for another railroad company discovered a river in west Texas and named it the Pease River in honor of the governor. His brother-in-law, John C. Robinson, enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1845 and served as commissary and later a regimental and brigade quartermaster in the 5th Infantry. He fought in the Civil War and was awarded the Medal of Honor for valor. All proceeds to benefit educational programs at The Bryan Museum.
