Description

[Civil War] Cassius M. Clay Document Signed. One page, 7.75" x 9.75", Washington D.C., April 25, 1861. A partly-printed document certifying Gilman Marston as a member of "Cassius M. Clay's Battalion." With vignettes of three flags flanking an eagle atop a shield. Toned edges and flattened folds.

Gilman Marston had been serving as Congressman for New Hampshire in the Thirty-sixth Congress when he enlisted to serve in Clay's battalion. He would eventually be promoted to brevet general, and after Gettysburg, established a prison camp in Maryland (which later became Point Lookout). A scarce document related to Clay's battalion of volunteers who early on answered the call of their nation.
