Description
[Alamo Defender]. Thomas R. Miller Signed Land Transfer. Six pages with accompanying original transmittal cover, 8" x 11.5", Gonzales, Texas; June 12, 1832. Transfer of land from James Gibson to Green DeWitt, founder of one of the major colonies in the settlement of Texas. Signed, "Thomas R. Miller."This document features a scarce signature from Alamo defender, Thomas R. Miller. A native of Virginia, Miller immigrated to Texas in 1830 and settled immediately in Gonzales, the heart of DeWitt's colony. There, he quickly rose to prominence, becoming the owner of the only hotel in town and acting as the Gonzales road surveyor. However, he is most well-known for his role as one of Gonzales' "Old Eighteen." In 1835, Mexican forces attempted to take back a small cannon that had been given to the town to help settlers protect themselves from hostile indigenous groups. Miller, along with seventeen other men, delayed Mexican soldiers until support arrived from nearby Texas towns. The efforts of the Old Eighteen resulted in the Battle of Gonzales, which is widely considered to be the start of the Texas Revolution. One year later, on March 1, 1836, Miller was one of thirty-two Gonzales Rangers who answered the Alamo's call for help. He died six days later defending the fort.
In addition to Miller's signature, this land transfer includes an autograph from another founding member of the Texas Republic: José Antonio Navarro. The commissioner who brokered this deal, Navarro was a leading Mexican participant in the revolution and a close friend of Stephen F. Austin. He was one of only three Mexican signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence on March 2, 1836. Nearly a decade later, he served as the only Hispanic delegate to the Convention of 1845 where Texas voted to join the United States.
Condition: Envelope toned with minor paper loss at the margins. Creased along folds. Toning and staining on each page of the land transfer with minor paper loss at all margins, occasionally affecting text. Small hole at the center of the first two pages, affecting the text. Orange seal intact.
