Description

Samuel and John Augustine Washington Signed Document. "John Auguston Washington" and "Sam Washington". Two pages, 7.5" x 1.75", Mount Vernon, July 12, 1770. Original receipt for payment for work done to Mount Vernon, witnessed by George Washington's brothers Samuel and John Augustine. The document contains two written receipts, one on the front and one on the verso. The front side shows payment for work to "John Auguston Washington", who indeed managed the estate of Mount Vernon during George Washington's absences during the French and Indian War. The back of the document has another receipt of a payment made from John Augustine Washington to John Rice, and signed as also being witnessed by "Sam Washington". His signature appears in the lower left and exceeds 2" in length. This document is a rare find, in that it contains signatures of both Washington's brothers. The receipt is in fine condition, if slightly toned, but the dark brown ink is not affected adversely. Usual folds are present, with the reverse side more affected by soiling and toning than the obverse.
