Description
Robert Morris Document Signed "Robt. Morris." One page of a bifolium, 8.25" x 13.75", Philadelphia, May 13, 1796. This indenture holds Morris, a merchant, "firmly bound unto Jeremiah Parker of the same place [Philadelphia] Merchant in the sum of Nine hundred and seventy seven pounds." Morris' signature is very large and bold. With paper seal and countersigned by Garrett Cohinger and James Rees. The paper is age-toned and bears some dark toning around the folds and along the right edge. Repairs to a fold exist on page two and three. Small hole at the intersection of the main horizontal and vertical folds. Morris (1734-1806) was a Pennsylvania statesman who, seventeen years before signing this document, served successfully as the superintendent of finance for the new U.S. Government. Mishandling of his own finances, however, bankrupted him in 1798, and he ended up in debtor's prison. Also included is an engraving of Morris. From the Donald P. Dow Collection.Auction Info
