Description

Robert M. "Three Legged Willie" Williamson Signed Petition. Three pages of a bifolium, 15.5" x 12.5" (sight, including both written pages on a single side). Washington County; September 21, 1839. Williamson signs attesting that the facts presented in a petition filed on his behalf requesting the confinement of John Niesbit are true. The petition fills the first one and a half pages of the document and is addressed to judge John Y. Mills. In part: "The humble petition of Robert M. Williamson respectfully sheweth that one John Niesbit lives on the land of your petitioner... that the said John Niesbit is subject to paroxysms of madness, that in his fits of fury he is disposed to commit acts of outrage and violence... those with whom he may come in contact; that the said Niesbit has twice attempted the life of your petitioner presenting at him a loaded musket at the distance of ten or twelve steps..." Williamson signs attesting to the veracity of the petition. An order to the sheriff ordering him to "take the body of John Niesbit and him safely keep" is written on the facing page.

Williamson was struck by an illness at the age of fifteen that left him disabled for life. His right leg was folded back at the knee and rested on a wooden leg, which earned him the moniker "Three Legged Willie". He migrated to Texas in the late 1820s and settled in San Felipe de Austin. He participated at the Battle of San Jacinto, and received 640 acres as a bounty.

Condition: Flattened folds, with bits of paper loss thereat. Bold ink resulting in ink burn. Framed with glass on both sides for display to an overall size of 24.5" x 22.25".
