Description

Revolutionary War Pay Voucher Issued to a Black Soldier. One partially printed page, 7.5" x 4.5"; Hartford, Connecticut; June 1, 1782. A pay order in the amount of nine pounds and nine shillings issued to Jack Freeman. Signed by John Lawrence as Treasurer. Jack Freeman was born in Fairfield, Connecticut and was first sold as a seven-year-old child to Jonathan Booth of Newtown, and later to Hezekiah Sanford. During the Revolutionary War, he served under Sanford's brother, Captain Ezekiel Sanford. Freeman fought at the battles of Peekskill, Germantown, Valley Forge, and Princeton. More than five thousand black soldiers fought in the Revolutionary War.

Condition: Extensive restoration, including a strip along the top and a .5" x 1" bit at the center left, which have been added from a different certificate. Extensive endorsements on the verso.
