Description

Queen Victoria Signed Appointment for Henry Evelyn Wood. One page, 13.5" x 9.5" (sight), [London]; September 10, 1855. Appointment of Henry Evelyn Wood as Colonel of the 13th Regiment of Light Dragoons. Signed, "Victoria." Together with a boudoir card image of Wood in full uniform signed, "Evelyn Wood / 1903." The albumen and mount measure 7" x 12" (sight). The appointment and boudoir are matted and framed with an informational plaque to an overall size of 24.75" x 17".

This military appointment marked the beginning of a long and illustrious military career for Wood that spanned nearly fifty years. Throughout the 1850s, Wood served in the Crimean War and Indian First War of Independence, where he received a Victoria Cross for his efforts at Sinhara. After that, he spent most of his time stationed in Africa, where he fought in the Zulu War and the First Boer War. Wood is considered one of the most distinguished British soldiers of the nineteenth century.

Condition: Document creased along folds with minor separations and toning. Photograph has crease along the bottom of the albumen, and the signature is a bit light. Not examined outside of the frame. Frame slightly scuffed.
