Description

Queen Isabella of Spain Document Signed "Yo La Reina." One page, 8.5" x 12", in Spanish, circa 1486. Twice cut cancelled and archivally repaired on the verso. Isabella, ruled Castile and León. Her marriage in 1469 to King Ferdinand of Aragon unified Christian Spain and laid the foundation for Spain's future greatness. They had five children, including Catherine of Aragon, the first wife of Henry VIII of England, and Joanna the Mad, who was the mother of Charles V, king of Spain and Holy Roman Emperor. Isabella and her husband are famous for introducing the Inquisition in 1478, the Reconquista of Granada, and for their expulsion of the Jews from Spain. In 1492, they financed Christopher Columbus's voyage to the New World which led to the creation of the overseas Spanish colonial empire, bringing great wealth and power to Spain.
